UnBarred Brewery: mailing list design

UnBarred Brewery send out a transactional newsletter every week, and we redesigned it to be consistent with their website and optimised for mobile email inboxes.

The brief

UnBarred Brewery send out a transactional newsletter to their mailing list every week, but wanted its design to feel consistent with their website rather than sitting apart from it. The brief was to redesign the newsletter with that shared identity in mind, and to make sure it displayed correctly across popular email inboxes on mobile, since most subscribers open their email on a phone.

UnBarred also wanted the newsletter to be more useful to readers day to day, so part of the brief was to make it more helpful by including important contact information directly in the template.

The solution

We used Mailchimp to design a new newsletter template that aligns with UnBarred Brewery’s website branding and keeps the tone and vocabulary consistent between the two. The layout was tested and optimised so it renders correctly in popular email inboxes on mobile, where most subscribers read it, and important contact information was added so readers always have an easy way to get in touch.

UnBarred also sends a series of automated emails after someone signs up to their mailing list, so we styled these to match the new newsletter design, keeping the whole email experience consistent from sign-up onward. We also talked UnBarred through how the content can be edited, so their team can update the newsletter each week without needing outside help.

The result

UnBarred Brewery now sends out a newsletter that looks and reads like a natural extension of their website, with a template that displays correctly wherever their subscribers open it. With clear instructions on how to edit the content, UnBarred’s team can keep the weekly newsletter running and up to date on their own.

Brett, COO & head of marketing at UnBarred Brewery said this:

We’ve been working with Ben on a ad-hoc basis to help fix issues with our website, improve user experience, tweak design and functionality to help make the experience better for our customers. Ben has been great at communicating, ideas, explaining how and why things need to be done and create easy to use guides if we or anyone else ever needs to revisit the work that has been done.
